Overview
Embark on a thrilling full-day adventure to the spectacular Rainbow Mountain, known locally as Vinicunca, a colorful geological wonder nestled in the high Andes of Peru. This natural marvel, with its vibrant mineral stripes, has become one of the most photographed destinations in the country.
Ideal for active travelers, this trek combines scenic landscapes, Andean wildlife, and a rewarding summit view, making it one of the most unforgettable experiences around Cusco.
Places to Visit
- Rainbow Mountain Viewpoints – Stunning panoramic views of the multicolored peak and surrounding valleys
- Pitumarca Valley – Traditional Andean farming village and scenic trailhead
- Andean Highlands – Rolling hills with grazing alpacas and snowcapped peaks
- Red Valley (optional) – Remote scenic trail with rich red-toned earth formations
Itinerary
Early Morning Pickup (Approx. 04:00 AM)
The journey begins with a hotel pickup in Cusco. You’ll travel by private vehicle for approximately 3 hours to the small village of Cusipata, where you’ll stop for a light breakfast and acclimatize to the altitude.
Arrival at Trailhead and Start of Hike (Approx. 07:00 AM)
Continue to the trailhead near Chillihuani or Phulawasipata (depending on season), located at over 4,600 meters above sea level. Begin the scenic trek surrounded by snow-capped peaks, herds of alpacas, and expansive Andean vistas.
Ascent to Rainbow Mountain Summit (Approx. 09:00 AM – 10:00 AM)
The hike is moderately challenging and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the Vinicunca summit (5,036 m / 16,522 ft). Once at the top, enjoy sweeping views of the colorful mountain ridges caused by centuries of mineral deposition, and take time for photos and rest.
Optional Extension to Red Valley (If conditions and time permit)
For those feeling strong and acclimatized, an optional 45-minute detour leads to the lesser-visited but equally striking Red Valley, known for its intense red terrain and peaceful surroundings.
Descent and Return to Cusipata (11:30 AM – 13:00 PM)
Begin your descent along the same trail, returning to the base where transportation awaits. Then head back to Cusipata for a well-deserved buffet lunch featuring Andean and Peruvian dishes.
Return to Cusco (14:00 PM – 17:00 PM)
After lunch, relax during the drive back to Cusco, arriving in the late afternoon and dropping off at your hotel.
